Wadi al-Salam - the largest cemetery in the world of
Wadi al-Salam means "Valley of Peace" is an Islamic cemetery, located in the holy city of Najaf, Iraq. Cemetery covers an area of 1,485.5 hectares and has more than 5 million graves.
Wadi al-Salam is also the only cemetery in the world, where burial process continued for over 1400 years.
During the 2003 war, the armed forces of Iraq used the cemetery as a shelter and a place for an ambush. The U.S. military did not know then about the underground galleries and secret hideouts in the cemetery.
